Doggy Donation #5 Surprise!

We took our fifth donation into Great Plains last Saturday night and had no idea what was coming our way.

image

Mom, how come those dogs get peanut butter but I can’t have it?

We dropped off our goodies and decided to walk around like we normally do to see all the dogs. Then it happened, we saw Legend the two year old Great Dane.  On his kennel it said not available see the front desk.  So we decided to inquire to see what the situation was.  He was a stray and had another day before he was available for adoption, but they said we could play with him if we wanted to. Of course we did and fell in love with his sweet and happy temperament.  We could tell he had the personality that would get along with Tucker and asked if we could bring him in the next day for a meet and greet.  They said yes and we were so excited we were there 30 minutes before they opened.  They took the two dogs out and Tucker was more excited with all of the smells but Legend could not contain himself with all of the excitement to meet Tucker.

Puppy play day!

As you can see Legend has a crooked tail.  Initially they thought that was from being broken but after his medical examination they think it was a birth defect and should not cause any problems.

image

Mom, this guy is pretty cool. He is really hyper but pretty cool.

Legend loved Tucker, and Tucker liked Legend but you could really tell that Legend was obsessed with Tucker.  They got along great, no snapping or any upsets in the hour and a half that they played.

image

Mom, there are soooo many smells here!

The boys had a great time playing and Reid and I felt really good about that.  I took Legend out on a leash to see how he did and I was not disappointed. He walked wonderfully, no real pulling and waited until we were in the grass to relieve himself.

Mom, these floors are slick! This guy keeps falling down.

We let the pups play inside because it was getting hot outside and they were happy to play but the floors were posing a problem for Legend and he kept slipping around so we had to try and contain them which was no easy job.

Everyone meet my new brother!

After all of this we decided that Legend was a good fit for our family and we placed a hold on him until they finished his medical and behavior checks. Now we have to wait and prepare the house for his arrival!

image

We decided that we would name him Doc Holiday (Reid’s call) and have already began making his place at home. We wanted to share with everyone the exciting news! Though we do have to wait longer than expected because Doc got kennel cough this week and has to be held there a little longer so he is recovered and healthy when we bring him home to Tucker. This also means that Tucker has been under a close watch to make sure he didn’t catch it while we were there. Wish us luck with our both of our dogs’ health and that we get to bring Doc home soon.

Doggy Donation #4 and Dog Treats

I am late posting this but we did get our Doggy Donation in during the month of April. My birthday is April 25th and we actually took it on my birthday which was an extra warm fuzzy for me.

image

We donated our usual: dry dog food, canned dog food, dog treats, and paper towels. They had already closed the adoption viewing so we didn’t get to see any dogs while we were there but they were very happy we stopped in. Reid didn’t want Tucker to feel left out so while I was running late one night they had a guys trip to Petco.

image

Mom, I’m going to say it. Dad is taking the lead in parent points right now.

I’m told Tucker picked it out all by himself in the store. He loves those giant bones and has been very happy with his find.

image

Everything is awesome!

Tucker also has a habit of getting it stuck under the bed or the couch and whining until we crawl down and get it for him.

image

MMMOOOOMMM, I need your help.

That gets old after he gets it stuck continually for hours. Even if we get it out and make him play with it somewhere else he brings it back and gets it stuck again. More exciting that way I guess.

Doggy Donation #3

Reid and I packed up some donations for Great Plains SPCA again this month.  We keep going back to them because we just love the facility. I am thinking about trying to volunteer there. I’m afraid I would be to sad I couldn’t take them all home though. This time we purchased a big pack of paper towels, a flat of canned dog food and a large bag of dry dog food.

Mom, I want the canned food!!!

Of course we walked around looking at all the dogs and I wanted to take home all of them. Its so hard not to, I just get so sad that people didn’t want a dog or that a dog was born on the streets.  Sorry that sounds really depressing but there was an adorable chocolate lab there that broke my heart.  He is 8 years old and named Gus, but that tells me he most likely had a family at one point.

Then we met an adorable 2 month old retriever puppy named Percy that stole my heart again.

I know that because I have a lot going on at work that makes me vulnerable to taking on distractions, and in my mind puppies solve everything! But I have to think long term and remember we have to have Tucker healed and make sure we can properly care for him first.  Speaking of my handsome furchild that loves to cause mischief, I will have an update on his most recent check up from today……

Doggy Donation #2

We are sticking to our new years resolution of a doggy donation once a month to a local animal shelter.  This month caught up with us pretty quick so we didn’t have time to research a new shelter and decided to head back to Great Plains SPCA since we knew their hours.  We got a bag of food and two flats of canned dog food for the shelter.

image

This stuff looks tasty, why don’t I get it?

While we were there we decided to wander around and meet some of the dogs. We were able to have one of the dogs named Roger come out and play. Roger is a 5 year old mastiff, well over 150 pounds and of course is adorable.

image

Mom! Who is this dog on my blog!?

Roger was so calm and sweet, he came up and rested his head right on my shoulder.  Reid and I were pretty smitten with Roger, but even if we were thinking about a dog we couldn’t have him.  He was not good with other dogs. If he was we both came to the realization he would have came home with us to meet Tucker.  They had a couple come in with two Great Danes this morning to meet him and the dog meeting did not go well at all.  We know someone will adopt him soon though.  Roger was the perfect weight, great teeth and fur.  He was well cared for before he came to the shelter and has the sweetest personality.

We liked how they have doggy meet and greets for people that currently own pets and want to make sure everyone gets along. We also saw an adorable white fluffy puppy name Winter.  He is five months old and looked like a Great Pyrenees even though they had him labeled as a Golden Retriever. He was so fluffy!

image

Mom, that looks like me when I was a puppy!

They had a sign on Winter’s kennel saying he was no longer available but he is still online.  We hope all the cute dogs get adopted soon!

Doggy Donations

Reid and I sat down to make actual new years resolutions this year.  In my classes I teach the students goal setting and I thought it would be appropriate to have a goal this semester along with them.  So Reid and will be donating supplies to a local dog shelter once a month.  We were really excited about this because even though its not a huge donation we still felt we were ready to start giving back and wanted to do what we could.  Our first box  went Great Plains SPCA-Independence Location.

image

Mom, where are you!?

This is a local shelter and they help so many animals here, not just dogs and cats.  They take in basically everything.  I have been there before with my cousins to play with the cats and really loved the facility.

image

We followed their donation suggestions from their webpage and ended up getting a little of everything.

image

Mom, why can’t I have it?

Here is our list of goodies:

  1. Pack of Paper Towels
  2. Hand Sanitizer
  3. Dog Treats
  4. Canned Dog Food
  5. Dry Dog Food
  6. Peanut Butter
  7. Disinfectant Wipes

Next time we might buy a bunch of one item instead of one of each.  Even thought they  only use Science Diet for their animals, (they can purchase it at a discounted rate) they use the other brands for their HERO program.  They help families who cannot afford to feed their animals or they use it for their foster families that care for their animals in their own home.  Reid and I looked around while we were there and its hard not to come home with another dog.  There were so many cats and dogs there that needed homes.

We are super excited about this resolution and posting about it will make us more accountable to not forget one month.  So thank you readers for helping us stay on track. 🙂
